Communications team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Awal Mohammed, has slammed the current administration’s handling of illegal mining, describing the government’s efforts as insufficient.
Speaking on the AM Show, Mohammed said, “I think the government has really done nothing. Yes, that I can say emphatically.”
He contrasted the present administration’s inaction with measures taken in 2024. “In 2024, we were doing arrests.
We were even burning excavators. We were jailing people,” he recalled, highlighting what he described as more decisive action under the previous government.
Mohammed also pointed to a recent incident as evidence of the government’s lack of control.
“In the last year, this is the first time we are hearing an MP organised a group of people to attack military people in a police station,” he said, framing the event as a concerning escalation linked to illegal mining activities.
In a nutshell, the NPP communications official emphasized that the current government must adopt a stronger approach to tackle the issue, warning that public safety and national resources remain at risk if illegal mining continues unchecked.
