The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has become a trending topic on social media platform X as of January 14, 2025.
This comes in the wake of dramatic events during the vetting of President John Mahama’s first ministerial appointments by Parliament’s Appointments Committee.
The vetting process, a constitutional mandate, officially commenced on January 13, 2025.
The session began with Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Member of Parliament for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam and the current Majority Leader, who has been nominated as Minister-designate for Finance. Dr. Ato Forson addressed the committee amid the country’s ongoing economic challenges.
Another key nominee was Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice-designate.
However, proceedings took a dramatic turn during Dr. Ayine’s vetting, leading to heightened tensions and Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin walking out in protest.
The walkout was triggered by disagreements over a question posed to Dr. Ayine regarding a potential conflict of interest involving his law firm.
Suame MP John Darko insisted on revisiting the issue, despite the Chairman’s assertion that it had already been addressed.
Tensions escalated further when Afenyo-Markin accused the Chairman of bias against members of the NPP, describing his approach as unfair.
“Chairman, with the greatest of respect, I have observed consistently the way you go at my members, especially the young ones, the new ones, it’s not the right way… It is not too right,” he said before leaving the session.
Afenyo-Markin’s actions have sparked widespread discussion on social media, drawing both criticism and support from the public.sme)
