UPDATE: Crashed aircraft was flying from Ho to Accra

Authorities have confirmed that two people were on board the microlight aircraft that crashed in Tema on Monday afternoon.

In an update, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority said the aircraft, with registration number 9G-ADV, was flying from Ho to Accra at the time of the incident.

“The aircraft was flying from Ho to Accra, estimating Accra at 1520 Z,” the authority said in a statement.

According to the regulator, communication with the aircraft was lost shortly before the crash.

“The last contact with the aircraft on radio was 1418 Z,” the statement added.

Emergency personnel responded quickly after the aircraft went down. Officers from the Ghana National Fire Service arrived at the scene to extinguish the flames, while the Ghana Police Service assisted with security and recovery operations.

The response team later retrieved the charred bodies of the victims from the wreckage.

The aircraft crashed at Oninku Drive School Park in Tema. Local authorities say students in the area were not harmed.

Mr Ahmed Abdullia, Assemblyman for the Kwesi Plange Electoral Area, confirmed that the school children were safe.

“None of the students at the Oninku Drive School Park was hurt,” he said.
