We are dealing with policy failure, not personalities – Afenyo-Markin on GoldBod

Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin has the Minority’s push to scrutinise GoldBod is aimed at examining financial losses and possible policy weaknesses, rather than targeting individuals.

He explained that the caucus decided to pursue parliamentary scrutiny after receiving and analysing a report from the International Monetary Fund.

“We are not, for want of a better word, accusing anybody. What we are doing is that we are exercising our oversight,” Afenyo-Markin said.

According to him, the Minority’s finance team reviewed the report and concluded that Parliament needed to examine the issues as part of its oversight responsibility.

He said the process should follow parliamentary procedure when the House resumes in October, beginning with the matter going before the Business Committee, followed by tabling, debate and the establishment of an ad hoc committee.

Afenyo-Markin said GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi’s willingness to appear before Parliament would allow the matter to be properly examined in public.

“So we can have a beautiful democratic exercise before the cameras. And then Ghanaians will now appreciate the matters we have raised,” he said.

He stressed that the focus should remain on the performance of the policy and its financial consequences.

“We are not dealing with personalities. We are dealing with policy failure. We are dealing with losses. We consider amount of financial loss to the state. And we should delve into it,” he stated.

He added that the scrutiny could also help the government identify weaknesses in its policies and make the necessary reforms.
