We haven’t been allowed access to him – Lawyer suggests Abu Trica is missing

Lawyer and activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor says his legal team has been unable to gain access to Fredrick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, for more than a week and is preparing to file a habeas corpus application.

In a statement shared on social media, Barker-Vormawor said he had received information that Abu Trica had been taken to the Police Hospital.

“I have just found out from sources at the Police Hospital that Abu Trica has been rushed to the hospital,” he wrote.

According to him, repeated requests by the legal team to meet their client have not been granted.

“It has been over a week; we haven’t been allowed access to Abu Trica as lawyers, and our request to meet him as his lawyers has not been granted,” he said.

Barker-Vormawor further claimed that the legal team has not been informed where Abu Trica is currently being held.

“In fact we have no idea where he is being held and Interpol, which first had custody of him, say they don’t have him,” he stated.

He said the legal team would file a habeas corpus application if access to their client continues to be denied.

“We will be filing a habeas corpus application by tomorrow if the Republic continues to deny him something as basic as his right to counsel,” he added.

Barker-Vormawor also criticised the handling of the case, arguing that the rights of Ghanaian citizens should be protected regardless of the allegations against them.

Abu Trica has been in custody since December 2025 after being sought by United States authorities over allegations linked to an $8 million romance fraud case.

Earlier, an Accra High Court ordered his extradition to the United States to face the charges. The ruling is expected to be followed by further legal proceedings, including any possible appeals.
