The government of Ghana has stepped up efforts to secure a visa for Thomas Partey before the Black Stars’ first match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says they are using all diplomatic means to solve the issue.
Mr Ablakwa said the situation is urgent, but he still believes it can be solved in time.
“We are using all diplomatic channels available to us and remain hopeful that this matter can be resolved before Ghana’s opening game.”
The issue started after Canada’s immigration office, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), refused Thomas Partey a Temporary Resident Visa. This led Ghana to officially complain through diplomatic channels.
Ghana will start their tournament against Panama on Wednesday, June 17. Officials are working quickly because the problem could stop one of Ghana’s key players from joining the team.
