Some NPP parliamentary candidates from the 2024 elections have thrown their support behind Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s flagbearer contest on January 31, 2026.
Speaking at a press conference on January 8, Andrew Agyapa Mercer representing the former candidates, said their endorsement complements the bacing already declared by 63 NPP MPs elected in 2024. “This shows growing unity within the party and signals strong momentum for Dr Bawumia,” he stated.
The group explained that their support followed consultations with party executives, local leaders, youth and women groups, farmers, businesspeople, religious figures, and traditional authorities across constituencies. “The feedback revealed overwhelming support for Dr Bawumia,” Mercer added.
The former candidates said their decision was based on careful analysis and conviction, not inducement or pressure.
They described Dr Bawumia as a visionary leader whose experience in economic management, digital transformation, and initiatives such as the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme make him the most prepared candidate for the party’s future.
“We believe Dr Bawumia is the most experienced and winnable candidate, with a clear vision for digitalisation, economic growth, infrastructure development, human capital, agriculture, and good governance,” the group said.
They pledged to work with him to secure success in the flagbearer race and future elections, urging party members to rally behind his candidacy for the good of the NPP and the country.
