The First Vice Chairman of the NPP in the Ashanti Region, Kwabena Nsenkyire, says the conviction of Chairman Wontumi will strengthen the party’s resolve to return to government in 2029.
Speaking to JoyNews, Nsenkyire said party members would use the development as motivation ahead of the next general election.
“This is rather going to ginger us because we need to get him out. He needs to come out at all costs,” he said.
He added that if delegates renew his mandate as Regional First Vice Chairman, he would continue working to help the NPP regain power.
“If the delegates give me the mandate to serve as Regional First Vice Chairman again, I will work tirelessly, just as I did for Dr Bawumia, to demonstrate that when we return to power, we can secure a presidential pardon for him,” he said.
Nsenkyire argued that the party’s return to government should become a priority for its members.
“If the NPP were in power, would this happen to Wontumi? No, it’s not going to happen to Wontumi. This is the reason why we have to work very hard for the NPP to come into power in 2029, and we can get him out,” he said.
Chairman Wontumi was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment following his conviction in a case arising from an anti-illegal mining operation conducted at the Samreboi concession in April 2025.
The prosecution said he permitted mining activities on the concession without the required ministerial approval.
