What happened to not guilty until proven guilty? – George Afriyie quizzes Canadian Gov’t

George Afriyie believes the absence of Thomas Partey from Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup opener could serve as motivation for the Black Stars as they begin their Group L campaign against Panama.

Partey will miss the match after being denied entry into Canada, despite being named in Ghana’s final tournament squad.

According to reports confirmed by FIFA, the Canadian government refused his visa application, meaning he cannot travel from Ghana’s base in Boston to Toronto for the game.

Reacting to the development in an interview with Adom FM, Afriyie expressed disappointment over the decision and questioned its fairness, noting that the midfielder has not been convicted of any offence.

“What happened to not guilty until proven guilty?” he said.

Despite the setback, Afriyie insisted the situation could strengthen team unity and push the players to respond positively on the pitch.

“I think the players will step up for Thomas Partey. This decision must inspire the players to play for the country and for themselves.”

He also referenced Ghana’s 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign, when the team reached the quarter-finals without injured midfielder Michael Essien.

“It was difficult for the players, and some will be disappointed, but they must focus and play,” he added.
