Why Mahama should have reconsidered Agbenyo’s appointment – Appiah-Kubi

A leading NPP member Andy Appiah-Kubi has questioned President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to proceed with Emelia Afi Agbenyo’s appointment as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission despite concerns about public perception.

Appiah-Kubi argued that the President should have reconsidered the appointment after receiving petitions and advice about the controversy surrounding the choice.

Speaking on TV3’s Keypoints on October 17, 2026, he also questioned why Mahama warned the newly appointed deputy commissioners to perform their duties diligently if concerns about public mistrust were already apparent.

“If the President knew that he would be confronted with such a situation of mistrust, he had the capacity to, even if he was not aware and it came to his attention before the inauguration, change his mind,” he said.

The former MP argued that the President had an opportunity to consider the concerns before proceeding with the inauguration.

He, however, acknowledged that Mahama had the constitutional mandate to make the appointments and said the decision could be criticised politically but not challenged simply because of disagreement with it.

Appiah-Kubi urged the appointees to discharge their responsibilities diligently, expressing hope that their conduct would help address public concerns about the EC’s independence.
