Yaw Ampofo Ankrah’s lawyer denies World Cup visa fraud allegations

Lawyer for former National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Mr Avenorgbor, has denied allegations linking his client to a scheme that allegedly collected money from Ghanaians seeking visa and travel assistance for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He described the allegations as false, insisting that his client had neither met anyone to collect money nor taken part in any arrangement to facilitate travel for the tournament.

“My client has not done it. My client has not been in physical form, present with anybody, collected and taken money to do anything,” he said in an interview on Accra-based Channel One.

“These are falsities and untruths,” he added, expressing confidence that ongoing police investigations would establish what had happened.

Mr Avenorgbor said the case was being investigated by the Economic Crime Unit at the Police Headquarters and that the process had been underway for several weeks.

“The matter as we speak is at the police headquarters, the economic unit, and they’ve been investigating for weeks now,” he said.

He also rejected any suggestion that the alleged arrangement was conducted through the NSA, stressing that the agency was not the organisation for which Tribe worked.

“It’s not the NSA that Tribe worked for,” he said.

The NSA has previously denied authorising any visa facilitation or money-collection arrangement connected to the 2026 World Cup. The authority has also said its legal team is cooperating with the police investigation.

Mr Avenorgbor maintained that his client had done nothing wrong and described the allegations as an attempt to damage his reputation.

“My client has not done anything in this regard. This is information being peddled to denigrate the reputation of my client,” he said.

He urged the public to allow the investigation to run its course, adding that the findings would establish the facts.

“Investigations will reveal the pure truth behind what is happening,” he said, adding, “Time will reveal, and that’s it.”
