Kwasi Kwarteng, spokesperson for Kennedy Agyapong, has criticised the expectation that banks should participate in cleaning gutters, following the nationwide clean-up exercise and a confrontation involving Okaikwei North MP Theresa Lardi Awuni and staff of CalBank.
His comments come after the MP criticised CalBank employees for not taking part in the clean-up exercise on Friday, July 10.
In a statement, Mr Kwarteng argued that sanitation should be managed through government structures and not by expecting private institutions to carry out such responsibilities.
“You don’t collapse a sanitation ministry, cancel sanitation contracts and expect banks to clean our gutters,” he said.
He further maintained that periodic clean-up campaigns are not a substitute for a long-term sanitation policy.
“No serious country relies on occasional clean-up exercises as its sanitation strategy,” Mr Kwarteng stated.
