Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams has challenged Christians to look beyond appearances in church and pay more attention to members struggling to survive.
He said many people who appear well-dressed and comfortable in church may be dealing with serious financial problems that others know nothing about.
“There are so many needs in the church. People are struggling. So many individuals, single mothers, widows, can’t pay their children’s school fees, can’t pay rent,” he said during a recent sermon delivered to his congregation.
Duncan-Williams said Christians should take responsibility instead of becoming defensive whenever the church comes under criticism.
“Instead of reacting to people criticising us, we must take some responsibility,” he said.
He argued that genuine Christian living should involve selflessness and concern for people who need help.
“You see people in church, they are looking handsome, beautiful. You have no idea the sufferings and what they are going through,” he said.
The Archbishop also criticised Christians who make wills without leaving anything for the work of God, saying many people make provisions only for themselves and their immediate families.
“A lot of people die, and they make wills, and in their will, they don’t leave anything behind for the work of God,” he said.
For Duncan-Williams, the church has enough needs to keep believers focused on helping others rather than simply protecting their own interests.
