Seasoned journalist Paul Adom-Otchere has stated that the NDC’s victory in the 2024 election was largely helped by frustrated NPP supporters who stayed home rather than voting for the opposition.
He said the NPP’s economic record, coupled with issues such as the Cecilia Dapaah cash controversy, left many of its supporters disappointed.
“The NDC were able to take advantage of that situation,” he said in an interview with YouTuber Kwadwo Sheldon.
According to Adom-Otchere, the NPP could have retained power if it had repeated its 2020 performance.
He said the figures from the two elections show that the NPP’s support base remained strong, but many supporters did not turn out in 2024.
“The NPP people were so disillusioned by everything they were hearing and also by the punitive economic situation. And so they stayed home,” he said.
He pointed to Domeabra as an example, saying the NDC received fewer votes there in 2024 than it did in 2020 but still won the constituency.
Adom-Otchere said the situation showed that the 2024 election was not simply a rejection of the NPP in favour of the NDC.
He also argued that the wider economic situation affected governments around the world after COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war.
He cited the United States and the United Kingdom, where governments also faced political pressure after rising prices and economic difficulties.
For him, the 2024 result should therefore not be read as proof that the NPP had lost its political strength.
