Sam George reveals how young men are coerced into cybercrime networks

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has cautioned foreign nationals against accepting unverified offers that could draw them into cybercrime activities in Ghana.

He said intelligence from the Cyber Security Authority showed that some young men were being exploited and coerced by cybercrime kingpins who operate from residential apartments.

“The intelligence indicated that young men were being exploited and coerced to engage in various cybercrime activities at these locations,” he said in a post on Facebook.

The minister explained that many of those picked up during the operations were not the masterminds but individuals who had been lured into the country under false promises.

“We caution foreign nationals invited to Ghana to verify claims made by their fellow nationals to lure them here,” Sam George stated.

He added that some individuals arrested in previous operations have already been profiled by the Ghana Immigration Service and INTERPOL and handed over to Nigerian law enforcement authorities at the Seme border.

“Others are currently facing criminal prosecution before the law courts,” he said.

According to the minister, Ghana will continue to work with international partners to deal firmly with cybercrime while ensuring that victims are properly identified.

“Protecting Ghana’s cyber image internationally is non-negotiable,” he added.
