A leading member of United Party (UP) Solomon Owusu has stressed the importance of maintaining an independent electoral management system in an interview on Joy Prime.
He argued that election administration should remain free from direct political control.
According to him, Ghana’s electoral framework was designed to ensure free and fair elections.
He referenced historical developments that led to the establishment of an independent body to oversee elections.
“One of the reasons an independent system was created was to organise free, fair and honest elections,” he said.
Owusu argued that allowing government ministries or political actors to directly supervise elections could raise concerns about neutrality.
“Before then, it was the Local Government Ministry that was organising elections,” he said.
He maintained that electoral institutions should operate independently to strengthen confidence in election outcomes.
Owusu also commented on the 2024 electoral process, saying improvements can still be made to election administration.
“The electoral process should be seamless,” he stated.
According to him, maintaining independence and strengthening oversight mechanisms remain important elements of electoral management.
