Anthony Joshua accident update: Court hears driver was overtaking truck before crash

A new update regarding the accident involving British boxer Anthony Joshua has been shared, with a Nigerian court hearing that his driver was attempting to overtake a moving truck when the Lexus SUV carrying the boxer and his friends crashed into a stationary lorry.

The crash killed Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami, while Joshua was taken to hospital.

The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, has denied charges including causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.

The court heard that Joshua and the two men were travelling to visit Joshua’s father in Ogun State when the crash happened on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Makun last December. The passengers were asleep when Kayode attempted the overtake.

Inspector Christopher Ajayi Taiwo of the Ogun State Motor Traffic Division told the court that both vehicles had been removed from the scene before he arrived.

Debris and soya beans from the lorry’s load were scattered across the road.

The court also heard that police have still not taken a statement from Joshua, eight months after the crash. When questioned by Kayode’s lawyer, Inspector Taiwo said he had not contacted the boxer because he did not have his phone number.

A second defendant, Abubakar Adamu, 35, the driver of the stationary lorry, has denied a charge of obstructing the free flow of traffic.

The trial has been adjourned to September 10.
