Lawyer Kwesi Botchway Jnr has backed the NPP’s call for the removal of some security officials, arguing that those who failed to prevent repeated drug interceptions should not remain responsible for finding solutions to the problem.
Responding to whether the Interior Minister and other heads of agencies targeted by the NPP should be replaced, Kwesi said they should leave office.
“Of course,” he said on Joy News. He argued that the officials had been in charge while the country experienced what he described as an embarrassing series of drug-related incidents.
“They have to go, because the people who have sat down, who have neglected their duties for these things to happen, cannot be the same people finding solutions to their problem,” he said.
“If they had solutions, they would have prevented them.”
Kwesi further accused the government of focusing its security machinery on political opponents instead of organised crime.
“All what they know how to do best is to deploy the security architecture to go after political opponent,” he said.
He also questioned what he described as the failure to provide answers about the drug interceptions.
According to Kwesi, the government’s response should be measured by whether it can prevent further cocaine seizures.
“The answer is for us to see that from tomorrow there wouldn’t be any cocaine bust again. That is the answers Ghanaians demand,” he said.
“Any answer other than that is just a political answer.”
