Bagbin Warns Parliamentary Cocaine Inquiry Could Interfere with Pending Court Cases

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has cautioned that a proposed parliamentary inquiry into major narcotics seizures linked to Ghana could interfere with issues that are before the courts.

Explaining the scope of the proposed investigation, Mr Bagbin said the committee would have been required to examine transactions connected to the cases, the decisions taken by individuals and the reasons some actors acted while others failed to act at ports of entry.

“The proposed parliamentary enquiry will traverse factual matters that are directly connected to the criminal justice process,” he said during parliamentary sessions on September 29, 2026.

He noted that the committee’s work could involve examining evidence, calling witnesses and investigating the conduct and responsibilities of people whose actions may also be relevant to the pending judicial proceedings.

Mr Bagbin said such an inquiry would go beyond Parliament’s general oversight role because it could require the committee to determine issues that are properly for the courts to consider.

He warned that allowing the investigation to proceed in that form could affect parties involved in the cases.

The Speaker said parliamentary proceedings must be handled in a way that protects the judicial process, particularly where the same facts and questions of responsibility are being examined through ongoing criminal proceedings.
