NDC will not shield Obuasi SHTS headmaster if found guilty – Suhuyini

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team Hamza Suhuyini has said the party will not allow the party membership of the headmaster at the centre of the Obuasi Senior High Technical School sexual abuse allegations to influence investigations into the case.

He acknowledged that the headmaster’s political connections, relationships within the Ghana Education Service and links to local traditional authorities could give him influence, but insisted that such connections would not determine the outcome of the investigations.

“We wouldn’t run away from that fact. He would have friends, friendships that he has served probably for years. But the assurance we can give the good people of this country is that that beneficial relationship would not impact the nature of this investigation,” he said on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana.

Suhuyini said the fact that the headmaster belongs to the NDC could lead some people to suspect that he might use his political connections to influence the case, but stressed that this would not represent the position of the government or the party.

He said the government’s responsibility was to ensure justice for the students and their parents, regardless of the political affiliations of anyone involved.

“The fact that the gentleman at the centre of the controversy is a member of the National Democratic Congress does not necessarily mean that people, including the MPP, do not have the right to suspect that maybe he has some measure of influence within the ranks of the NDC that might impact the case,” he said.

Mr Suhuyini welcomed the pressure from the opposition, saying it could serve as a reminder that the party must not shield anyone found culpable.

“If they believe that is what will give the young people justice, we in the NDC welcome it. They can go on that tangent and accuse us. At least, it will serve as a constant reminder that we don’t need to cover up if this gentleman is guilty,” he said.
