Mahama has had 24 months – Miracles Aboagye challenges NDC to account for galamsey fight

NPP Director of Communications Dennis Miracles Aboagye has urged critics to stop bringing former President Nana Akufo-Addo into discussions about illegal mining, insisting that the current NDC government should be held accountable for its own performance.

He argued that President John Dramani Mahama’s administration had been in office for 24 months and should be judged against the promises it made to Ghanaians about tackling galamsey.

Mr Aboagye said Akufo-Addo faced intense criticism over illegal mining during his presidency, including demonstrations organised by political opponents and their allies.

“One of the things I hate, and it pisses me off when it comes to the galamsey conversation, is when anybody tries to bring Akufo-Addo into it. Stop. Don’t do it. Take him out. It’s been 24 months,” he said on Newsfile.

He recalled how the former President was publicly criticised and called names over the galamsey crisis, arguing that the NPP government treated illegal mining as a national problem.

According to him, the NDC presented galamsey as a problem it could resolve once it took over government, creating expectations that the situation would improve under its administration.

“So, the people are clear in their minds that, unlike the NPP and the Akufo-Addo administration, which considered galamsey a national problem, the NDC believes it is a government problem and that once it assumes office, galamsey will end,” he said.

Mr Aboagye described the current administration’s performance as a failure to meet its own promises.

“This is the evidence of how spectacular this NDC government has failed the people of this country on the back of their own promises and words,” he said.

He also claimed that the NDC government had not demonstrated half the effort the Akufo-Addo administration put into the fight against illegal mining.

“Let nobody pretend and be hypocritical. This government hasn’t done even 50% of what the Akufo-Addo government did in the fight against galamsey,” he added.
