Ghana’s Black Maidens have been eliminated from the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026 following a narrow 1-0 loss to Japan in their quarter-final clash at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, Pitch 1.
Coach Joe Nana Adarkwa was forced to make two changes to his starting line-up for the crucial encounter. Captain Seidatu Wahab missed the game through injury, with Osman Rafia taking over the captain’s armband, while Hajara Adam was unavailable due to suspension after her red card against Argentina. Mavis Koah and Kpentey Belinda were brought into the starting team.
The Black Maidens delivered a disciplined defensive performance in the first half, making it difficult for Japan to create clear-cut opportunities as Adarkwa’s side sought to frustrate their opponents.
However, the Asian side eventually found the breakthrough nine minutes after the restart. A deflected effort from Yuka Kishida fell into the path of Nanami Kurita, who was well placed to finish from close range and put Japan ahead.
Ghana responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser, displaying the determination that had helped them overcome Argentina on penalties in the Round of 16 despite playing with ten players.
However, they struggled to break down a well-organised Japanese defence, with their opponents maintaining control of possession and protecting their advantage until the final whistle.
The defeat brings the Black Maidens’ campaign to an end at the quarter-final stage, but the team can take pride in their progress and resilience throughout the tournament.
Jessica Appiah, Cynthia Obinsrewuo, Osman Rafia and Belinda Marku Aklie were among the players who impressed during Ghana’s campaign in Morocco.
