Ghanaian singer Camidoh has opened up about being raised by a strict single mother and how his breakout hit Sugarcane transformed his career, in an interview with broadcaster Kafui Dey.
The musician said his mother, a teacher, was tough and protective because she wanted the best for him and was determined to keep him out of trouble. He recalled her discipline with affection, laughing as he remembered how much she shouted at home. “It’s a lot of pressure being raised by a single mom,” he said.
Looking back, Camidoh said he would not change a thing about his upbringing. He shared fond memories of his childhood around Keta in the Volta Region, where he played with cousins by the beach under the moonlight, joking that he wished a camera had followed him then so the moments could become a documentary.
The singer also reflected on the song that changed his life. He said Sugarcane, his 2021 breakthrough produced by Nigerian producer Phantom, opened international doors and helped him clear his debts, adding that it crossed 100 million YouTube views and later climbed to around 145 million.
He admitted he had initially doubted the popular Glitch live session version, questioning his team before being persuaded to let it go out. It became the platform’s biggest live session. Camidoh said he pushed the record himself with daily TikTok content, and insisted the success freed rather than trapped him, opening the door to his next chapter.
