Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has praised President Mahama’s outreach as the only proper thank you tour, in an apparent dig at the rival tour by the governing party’s chairman.
Speaking on Friday in Sawla as the President toured the Savannah Region under his Resetting Ghana Tour, Iddrisu drew a pointed line between Mahama’s engagements and a separate exercise. “A proper thank you tour of President Mahama, not the curtain-raiser one,” he said. The remarks were widely read as a jibe at National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia.
Asiedu Nketia is running his own nationwide Thank You Tour to appreciate Ghanaians for returning the NDC to power in 2024, arguing that he campaigned hard during the election and owed gratitude to those who delivered victory.
The comments landed on the same day the chairman, speaking on his tour in Tamale, defended the 2023 reshuffle that removed Iddrisu as Minority Leader in favour of Cassiel Ato Forson, saying the party needed a new line up to win the election. The episode left lingering tension between the two men.
The exchange is being read in political circles as early positioning within the NDC ahead of its 2027 congress to choose a candidate for the 2028 election, with Mahama constitutionally barred from running again. Both Iddrisu and Asiedu Nketia are seen as potential contenders.
