Former Head of Public Affairs at COCOBOD, Fiifi Boafo has said the Chief Justice must be careful not to create doubts about his political neutrality.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, he said Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie’s comments during visits to state institutions, including the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), have given people reason to question where he stands politically.
“Justice must not only be done. It must be seen to be done. You must not create any doubt in the minds of the people that you have taken sides, you have taken position,” Boafo said.
The Chief Justice had openly commented on Ghana’s performance under previous administrations during his visits to state institutions. The remarks drew condemnation from political analysts, governance experts and politicians.
For Boafo, the concern is not simply that the Chief Justice may have political friendships. It is the impression created when comments from the head of the judiciary appear to show a preference between the country’s two major political parties.
“The moment the Chief Justice is making preference between the two political parties, it gives room for people to question his neutrality, his fairness in the discharge of his duty,” he said.
Boafo said this is particularly important because the judiciary depends on public confidence in its fairness and impartiality.
