Dr Mrs Clementine Odei, Head of Unit at the University of Ghana Medical School Clinic, has urged people not to rely on their partners’ claims about their HIV status and to get tested themselves.
She said people who are entering relationships should encourage their partners to undergo an HIV test while also taking the test themselves.
“Don’t trust anybody,” Dr Odei said.
She explained that HIV testing is available free of charge at government hospitals.
“If you walk to any government hospital and you want to check HIV, you don’t pay for anything,” she said during an advocacy
Dr Odei also warned people against accepting a partner’s claim that they recently tested negative.
“And don’t let anybody tell you that I’ve gone to check, so I’m negative. Where are you there?” she said.
She encouraged people to make HIV testing part of their decisions when starting new relationships.
