Ghanaian Medical Doctor Mrs Clementine Odei has said people living with HIV can live for decades when they take their medication as prescribed.
The Head of Unit at the University of Ghana Medical School Clinic said advances in antiretroviral treatment have made it possible for people with HIV to live long lives without their condition being obvious to others.
“People have lived with it for 40 years, 30 years. You just come for your medication,” she said.
Dr Odei added that HIV medication is handled in a way that protects patients’ privacy.
“Nobody will know unless you want to tell,” she said.
She explained that even the packaging and storage of the medication are designed not to reveal that the drugs are for HIV treatment.
“We can’t- even the medicine, how we keep it- nobody knows it’s HIV medicine. It’s not even in anything that has a label on it,” she said.
