Ghanaian lawyer, Kwame Jantuah has mentioned that flooding cannot be blamed solely on nature because human behaviour continues to worsen the problem.
Speaking on TV3, he pointed to poor waste management, weak law enforcement and public disregard for sanitation regulations.
“It’s got to do mostly with human activity,” he said.
Jantuah recalled a time when refuse collection systems were more structured, with waste trucks regularly collecting rubbish from homes.
Today, he believes overflowing bins, indiscriminate dumping and poor waste disposal habits are contributing significantly to blocked drains and urban flooding.
He called for stronger public education campaigns and stricter enforcement of sanitation regulations.
“Most of all, educate the people. Don’t throw your refuse away carelessly,” he urged.
According to him, even the best drainage systems will struggle if waste management problems remain unresolved.
