GES to remove Twene Amanfo SHS teachers from Masters on Duty positions over student assault

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced plans to remove teachers of Twene Amanfo Senior High Technical School in Techiman from their positions as Masters on Duty after they assaulted a student.

Deputy Director-General in charge of Quality and Access at the GES, Dr Issahaque Munwaru, disclosed this in an interview on Joy FM, saying the teachers would be reprimanded and reassigned from their current duties.

“The teachers would have to be reprimanded, and they are also to be taken off their positions,” he said.

Dr Munwaru explained that preliminary investigations suggested the teachers assaulted the students after discovering that some of them were bullying their colleagues and extorting money from them.

He said the students allegedly used the metallic parts of their belts to lash colleagues who refused to pay the money demanded from them.

However, Dr Munwaru stressed that such conduct did not justify the teachers’ actions, adding that the law prohibited any form of punishment that inflicted pain on a child.

“The law does not permit anything that will inflict pain on the child,” he stated.

He warned that teachers who engaged in similar misconduct in future would face harsher disciplinary measures.

“Any further misconduct along the same line will not receive the same level. It is going to be more punitive,” he said.

The GES is also cooperating with security agencies investigating the incident after the Bono East Regional Police arrested the teachers.
