Ghana’s Parliament to Convene at International Conference Centre Due to Renovations

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has announced that the upcoming parliamentary session, scheduled for September 3, 2024, will be held at the Dome at the International Conference Centre, a venue of significant importance and suitability for such a crucial event.

This marks a notable shift from the traditional venue of the main Chamber of Ghana’s Parliament.

The decision was formalized in a letter dated August 27, 2024, signed by Speaker Bagbin.

The letter, a testament to Speaker Bagbin’s authority, cited Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution, which empowers the Speaker to designate an alternative location for parliamentary proceedings when necessary.

The relocation is necessitated by the ongoing renovations in the main Chamber of Parliament, a necessary step to ensure the safety and functionality of the parliamentary space.

Speaker Bagbin indicated that the extensive repairs, which involve substantial updates to the Chamber’s infrastructure—including working tables, chairs, and other essential furnishings—will not be completed in time for the scheduled session.

The move to the International Conference Centre’s Dome is intended to ensure that parliamentary activities proceed without interruption during the renovation period.
