It is for ‘too known’ purpose – Ansah-Asare on why people want to be lawyers

A former Director of the Ghana School of Law, has, Kwaku Ansah-Asare has opened up on why many people choose to study law, saying the motivation is not always about practicing the profession.

Speaking on Adom FM on March 27, 2026, as monitored by MyNewsGh, he said, “There is prestige attached to being a lawyer.”

He explained that some individuals pursue law mainly for recognition in society rather than for legal practice.

According to him, many lawyers do not actively practice but carry the title for status in their communities, churches, and social circles.

He added that in some cases, parents push their children into law for the respect it brings, not necessarily for a career path.

Ansah-Asare, however, cautioned that with the new Legal Education Bill expanding access to legal training, attention must be paid to maintaining quality in the system.
