Minority demands independent parliamentary inquiry into Obuasi SHTS abuse allegations

The Minority in Parliament is demanding an independent inquiry into the handling of earlier complaints in the alleged sexual abuse case involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).

Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei, who outlined the caucus’s demands, called for an investigation into possible political interference, the identification of officials responsible for any failures and sanctions where necessary.

The Minority is also demanding a thorough investigation of all allegations, prompt advice from the Attorney-General on the submitted docket and prosecution wherever the evidence warrants it.

Appiagyei said the affected students must receive immediate protection, counselling, medical care and legal assistance, while their identities remain confidential.

“Any intimidation or retaliation must be investigated promptly,” she said.

The caucus further wants the responsible ministers to brief Parliament on the chronology of events, actions taken and measures being implemented to protect students.

It has also called for confidential reporting channels in schools that operate independently of any headteacher accused of abuse.

The Minority says the independent inquiry should establish how earlier complaints were handled and identify officials responsible for any failures.
