NPP petitions SC and presidency, calls for attention to concerns over Ghana’s democratic system

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has submitted petitions to the Supreme Court and the presidency as part of its “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration.

The party said the petitions were aimed at highlighting what it described as threats to the rule of law, judicial independence and political freedoms under the current administration.

The NPP first presented its concerns to the Supreme Court before proceeding to Jubilee House to submit a second petition to the presidency.

At Jubilee House, the presentation was briefly delayed after the party objected to the level of representation assigned to receive the document.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who led the delegation, argued that the presence of senior NPP officials, including the party’s General Secretary and the Chief of Staff to the NPP flagbearer, required a higher-level representative from the presidency.

“We have selected our democracy. Without prejudice to your person, to nominate only you to come amounts to disrespecting us as a political party,” Afenyo-Markin told Nana Yaa Jantuah, the Presidential Staffer who was present to receive the petition.

The party, however, later proceeded with the submission, with the NPP Deputy National Youth Organiser presenting the petition on behalf of the party.

In the document, the NPP accused the Mahama administration of undermining democratic principles through what it described as arbitrary arrests, intimidation of political opponents and selective justice.
