Counselor Edem Adofoli believes parents have an important role to play in helping young people make responsible decisions about relationships and digital privacy.
He said simply warning children is no longer enough because many young people are already familiar with modern apps and digital platforms.
Instead, he encouraged parents to build trust with their children so they can have honest conversations about relationships and online behaviour.
“Bring the child close as a friend,” he advised during an interview on Joy Prime.
According to him, when parents create a safe environment, children are more likely to open up about their relationships and seek guidance before making decisions that could affect their future.
He also urged parents to discuss digital footprints and remind young people that intimate images shared today could remain accessible long after a relationship has ended.
“I want the child to understand what they are doing and create that safe space where they can come to you for further questions,” Adofoli said.
He added that helping children understand the possible consequences of their actions is more effective than forcing them to obey instructions.
