Prosecution closes case in Chairman Wontumi galasmey trial

The state has closed its case in the illegal mining trial involving Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, after its final witness completed testimony in court.

The last prosecution witness, an official from the Minerals Commission, concluded his evidence after cross-examination by defence lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi.

Under questioning, the witness said there was no record at the Commission showing that the accused persons held the specific permit being relied on in the case, stressing that any contrary conduct would fall under the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act, 2019.

Following the close of the prosecution’s case, the defence asked the court for time to file a submission of no case.

Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay rejected a four-week request and directed the defence to file within 14 days.

The matter has been adjourned to February 18, 2026.

Chairman Wontumi and Akonta Mining Company face charges linked to alleged unauthorised mining activities at Samreboi in the Western Region. They have pleaded not guilty and are on bail pending trial.
