SIM re-registration: Stop punishing citizens – Solomon Owusu fumes

Solomon Owusu, former NPP member now with the United Party, has criticized the new SIM card registration announced by Sam George, describing it as an “exercise in futility and ego power play.”

Owusu argued that proper verification should involve the National Identification Authority (NIA), which already holds citizens’ biometric data.

“Why aren’t we consulting the NIA? They have our biometrics. If it’s about verification, it should go through them,” he said on TV3 as monitored by MyNewsGh.

He also said mobile network operators bear responsibility for correctly identifying subscribers and should face penalties if they fail.

“The network providers have a duty to identify everyone properly. When they fail, citizens are the ones inconvenienced,” he explained.

Owusu called for coordinated action between the NIA, National Communications Authority, and telecom operators to make the registration process efficient and secure.

“We need a method that doesn’t keep putting people through the same hassle,” he added
