Political scientist and Head of the Centre for European Studies at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has warned against downplaying the seriousness of the assault involving a female student at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School.
Speaking on Joy News, he said the conversation should not focus only on the incident itself but also on what could have happened if events had taken a more serious turn.
“Imagine as they were going through this process, the girl lost her life, God forbid. What happens? What happens?” he asked.
The teacher involved, Eric Buernortey Apaflo, has since been arrested by the Ashanti Regional Police Command following the circulation of the video online.
Dr Asah-Asante said the incident demonstrates why educators must remain calm and exercise judgment even in difficult situations.
“It is an issue we have to look at and look at it carefully,” he stated.
According to him, violence in schools should never be treated as a routine disciplinary matter because the consequences can be severe and irreversible.
He called for a comprehensive investigation by the Ghana Education Service, saying authorities must establish exactly what happened and implement measures to prevent similar incidents.
“GES should be able to take their time, investigate this and come out and then be able to address this issue once and for all.”
