Former Attorney General Martin Amidu says recent remarks by President John Dramani Mahama confirm what he has maintained all along about the Bawku mediation process.
Reacting to the President’s acknowledgment that the mediation failed to produce a mutually accepted traditional settlement, Amidu stated, “The truth shall always prevail no matter how long it takes.”
He stressed that mediation cannot be confused with arbitration or adjudication.
According to him, mediation only succeeds when parties voluntarily agree to terms, it cannot impose binding findings.
Amidu recalled that in December 2025 he had publicly questioned whether Ghanaians were expecting an arbitration report or merely a mediator’s summary of discussions.
“With the greatest respect, mediation is not arbitration,” he insisted.
He added that the President’s recent clarification aligns with his earlier position.
“Thus far, the President and I are agreed,” Amidu said, underscoring that mediators cannot assume the authority of a court or arbitrator.
