TUC backs five-year presidential term but issues warning

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has backed the proposed extension of Ghana’s presidential term from four to five years but warned that citizens could also spend longer under poor governance.

TUC Secretary General Joshua Ansah said the union had taken note of the Constitution Review Committee’s proposal to amend Article 66 and the government’s acceptance of the recommendation.

He said the longer tenure could have negative consequences if a government failed to govern well.

“In the event of misgovernance, a five-year tenure also means citizens will have to endure the consequences for a longer period than under the current dispensation,” Ansah said duing a press conference.

He said the TUC’s support for the proposal should therefore not be seen as unconditional.

According to him, the longer presidential term must be accompanied by measures that improve the way the country is governed and protect citizens from the effects of poor leadership.
