TUC pushes for stakeholder consensus before constitutional changes

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is calling for broad stakeholder participation in Ghana’s constitutional reform process, including efforts to bring the opposition on board.

TUC Secretary General Joshua Ansah said the proposed extension of the presidential term should be considered alongside other changes aimed at improving governance.

He said the union did not believe the presidential tenure could simply be changed while the rest of the constitutional system remained unchanged.

“This recommendation is therefore tied to other recommendations that are intended to strengthen and improve governance. One cannot therefore merely agree to tenure extension and leave everything else the same,” Ansah said during a press conference.

He also called for efforts to build consensus among political parties and other stakeholders before the reforms are implemented.

Ansah acknowledged that reaching such consensus could be expensive and cumbersome, but said it was necessary because the Constitution is Ghana’s fundamental governing document.

He said broad participation would help build national unity around the proposed changes and ensure that the reforms address wider issues of power and accountability.
