US, Iran war: Today we’re told Ghana can be affected – Kofi Tonto

Kofi Tonto, aide to former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has described as inconsistencies in Ghana’s political discourse.

He said that for nearly two years, members of the opposition maintained that Ghana was insulated from the economic effects of international conflicts.

“We were told that Ghana is insulated,” he said during his appearance on TV3’s New Day to challenge what he , adding that arguments about global war affecting the local economy were dismissed at the time.

According to Tonto, recent acknowledgments that external factors can influence Ghana’s economy contradict those earlier claims. “Today we are being told that Ghana can be affected,” he said.

He argued that the decision by authorities to hold meetings and plan around energy security demonstrates recognition that external shocks matter. “The fact that you have to even have a meeting tells you that indeed our economy can be affected by exogenous factors,” he stated.

Tonto maintained that his position is not to wish for economic instability but to point out vulnerability.

“We all pray that this war comes to an end as quickly as possible,” he said, noting that prolonged conflict could disrupt supply chains and affect prices.

Ultimately, he said acknowledging Ghana’s exposure to global developments is necessary for honest policy discussions, particularly in periods of international uncertainty.
