Minister Kofi Adams to step aside while investigations continue into alleged irregularities involving Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup visa arrangements.
Assafuah, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Youth and Sports Committee, said the minister could not escape responsibility for information submitted to the United States Embassy through agencies under his supervision.
Speaking in an interview, the MP argued that the minister should have independently verified a list of 90 people presented as event coordinators or affiliates of the National Sports Authority (NSA), particularly after an earlier list had been found to contain names of people who were not NSA staff.
“If you are the minister for sports and you fail to do the double checking, the verification, the crosschecking to be sure that indeed all the 90 people that was submitted to you are indeed staff of the NSA or affiliates of the NSA, then you are the most incompetent minister that I’ve ever seen,” Assafuah said on TV3.
He argued that the minister was either complicit in the alleged wrongdoing or negligent in carrying out his duties.
Assafuah said the controversy had damaged Ghana’s reputation in the eyes of foreign diplomatic missions and called for the minister to step aside to allow investigations to proceed.
He acknowledged that investigations were ongoing but maintained that the information he had seen justified the call for the minister to temporarily leave office.
