Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to adopt a long-term approach as preparations begin for the Black Stars’ next FIFA World Cup campaign.
Kingston, who currently coaches Uganda’s U-17 national team, believes the GFA must move away from short-term solutions and implement a structured development plan that will build a competitive national team over several years.
Speaking on Joy Sports, the former Black Stars winger stressed the need to give a coach enough time to establish a clear philosophy and develop a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level.
“We need a long-term project to build a team. At least five years for a coach to build a team before a tournament,” Kingston said.
The former Ghana international also suggested that the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations should be viewed as part of the rebuilding process rather than a competition where the team is expected to win immediately.
According to Kingston, Ghana’s priority should be building a strong and competitive squad before targeting continental success.
“We shouldn’t be thinking about winning the AFCON because we do not have a team,” he added.
