Ghana started their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a dramatic win over Panama, scoring a late goal to take all three points in their Group L opener at Toronto Stadium.
The Black Stars were under pressure for much of the game but showed determination and character before Caleb Yirenkyi scored the winning goal from a fast counter-attack in stoppage time.
Panama made a strong start and almost scored less than three minutes after kick-off. A dangerous cross from Michael Murillo found Cecilio Waterman in the penalty area, and the striker’s powerful volley forced Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi to make an excellent save.
