Ablakwa may not have handled evacuation payments directly – Vondee argues

Twifo Atti-Morkwa MP David Vondee has argued that officials responsible for the administration of funds and logistical arrangements for Ghana’s evacuation exercise in South Africa should be held accountable for any wrongdoing, rather than making the controversy a political battle over Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

Mr Vondee said the minister was unlikely to have been directly involved in disbursing money to evacuees, arranging flights or issuing invoices and receipts.

“I do not believe that Honourable Ablakwa was actually directly in charge of disbursement of money to beneficiaries,” he said in an interview with Joy News.

“I do not think that Honourable Okudzeto Ablakwa was directly involved in arranging flights and evacuating people directly and issuing invoices and receipts. I do not think so,” he added.

The MP said political parties often blamed one another over controversies without identifying the individuals who carried out the transactions or failed to perform their duties.

He argued that officials within the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s accounting and administrative structures should be scrutinised to establish who was responsible for any irregularities in the evacuation exercise.
