Digital Economy: Bawumia Credited for Prepaid, NHIS Renewal and Mobile Money Services

Former Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has been hailed for promoting digital services in Ghana, citing mobile prepaid purchases, health insurance renewals and mobile money transactions as examples of their benefits to the public.

Nana Agyei of the NPP has argued that digital services have made everyday transactions more convenient for households, market women, and other users.

“Thanks to Dr Bawumia, we can now buy prepaid on our phones. This is the man we need for the development of Ghana,” he said on Kumasi-based Angel Fm

He also highlighted that users can renew their health insurance through mobile phones, saying the service lets people complete the process from home rather than visit an office.

Agyei further pointed to mobile money as a tool that enables market women and other traders to conduct transactions more easily.

According to him, these services demonstrate how digital technology can improve access to essential services and support everyday economic activities.

The NPP communicator also mentioned Zipline’s drone delivery service, crediting Bawumia with its introduction in Ghana. He criticised what he described as disruptions to the service under the current NDC government.

“They are saying drones are not needed for healthcare delivery,” Agyei said, arguing that the service should have continued to contribute to healthcare delivery.
