NPP delegates approve all 14 proposed constitutional amendments

The NPP has approved all 14 proposed constitutional amendments at its National Delegates Conference in Kumasi, despite an earlier call to defer the exercise.

Acting National Chairman Joseph Danquah Smith had proposed postponement, citing time constraints and concerns that delegates would not have enough time to properly consider the amendments alongside the national executive elections.

Among the key changes approved is the designation of the party’s flagbearer as its leader, replacing the National Chairman under a clause approved at the NPP’s January 2026 conference.

Delegates also approved changes to the election of Vice Chairpersons, including a system where candidates will contest specific positions, as well as the appointment of three additional Vice Chairpersons.

The amendments also create Deputy Communications Officer positions and elevate the IT Officer to an executive position.

Constitution Amendment Committee Chairman Frank Davies said the changes were needed to address gaps in previous amendments.

“These limited constitutional amendments were necessitated by some acts of omission and commission, which heralded the last amendment we had in 2025, so this is to cure the grey areas that we overlooked,” he said.

The conference has brought together 7,163 delegates to elect nine national executive officers, with the Electoral Commission supervising the polls.
