Police in Nigeria have arrested a 21-year-old woman and two hotel officials after Ambrose Alli University lecturer Dr Matthew Uwuigbe was found dead in a hotel room in Ekpoma.
Uwuigbe reportedly checked into the hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, with Angela Defa Jacob on October 5, 2026.
According to Edo State Police Command spokesperson Eno Ikoedem, the lecturer allegedly sent Jacob to fetch water. When she returned, she found him lying lifeless on the floor.
The hotel owner, manager and Jacob were subsequently taken into custody as investigations continued. Uwuigbe’s remains were deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
The police have not disclosed the cause of death, and no post-mortem findings had been made public at the time of reporting.
AAU Public Relations Officer Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of staff but said the incident occurred outside the university and was unrelated to its activities.
“We are not denying that he was our staff member, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he said.
